To become a Medical Physicist in Japan

For those wishing to become a Medical Physicist in Japan

Medical Physics is an academic field in which the know-how of physical engineering is applied to medicine and medical care. A Medical Physicist is a medical professional with expert knowledge of medical physics who confirms and ensures the accurate and safe application of radiation in medical care. To become a “Medical Physicist” in Japan, one has to be accredited by the Japanese Board for Medical Physicist Qualification (JBMP).
To receive accreditation, one has to pass the medical physicist certification examination of JBMP, meet the performance criteria, then apply for accreditation and undergo assessment.

Those wishing to become a Medical Physicist should basically aim to achieve one of the following four objectives:

  1. To complete a medical physics education program accredited by JBMP.
  2. To obtain a master’s or doctoral degree in science and engineering.
  3. To obtain a master’s or doctoral degree in radiological technology.
  4. To obtain a master’s or doctoral degree in a medical physics education program other than that mentioned in 1. above.

Those who have completed a medical physics education program accredited by JBMP can receive preferential handling in case of a new accreditation.
To become a Medical Physicist, it is also necessary to undergo specified clinical training and achieve a certain performance score.
